While motorcycle etiquette may seem complicated at first glance, it’s often much simpler than you realize. A majority of riding etiquette revolves around common sense and being courteous to other motorcycle riders, and it’s easy to get the hang of once you’ve got a bit of experience under your belt. However, to give yourself a head start—and avoid inciting any road rage— we recommend reading through our beginner’s guide to motorcycle riding etiquette below.

Be Friendly

Part of the appeal of riding a motorcycle is the sense of community that comes along with it. Other riders are often friendly, eager to talk shop, and interested in setting up group rides together. Simply waving at other riders can do a lot to let other motorcycle owners know you’re friendly and interested in joining the local riding community. Before long, you’ll likely be invited to join a riding group of your own.

Don’t Join a Group Without Asking

Speaking of riding groups, it’s important that you never join without an explicit invitation to come along. Riding groups often set specific positions during a ride to avoid confusion and potential accidents. Hopping in during a ride can often throw off these positions, cause widespread confusion, and upset the riders around you.

Don’t Touch Another Person’s Motorcycle

Because motorcycles are very easy to knock over and damage, it’s become a common courtesy to never touch a model without asking first. Even then, it’s not unlikely that a motorcycle owner will say no to your request. It’s also considered quite rude to request a ride from another motorcycle owner, although you’re welcome to accept one if they offer it to you.
