Riding your motorcycle is a great way to do errands and head to crowded downtown areas without the hassle of finding a parking space, since your bike can fit almost anywhere. However, when you’re in the city, you need to be especially careful to avoid mishaps. Here are a few city-riding tips for motorcyclists.

Be Visible

You’re going to be harder for motorists to see on a motorcycle, especially if you’re wearing all black and you don’t have enough lights. Make sure that your motorcycle has sufficient lighting on it in front and back. If your standard lights aren’t bright enough, swap them out for LEDs.

Your riding gear should be reflective or brightly colored to help you stand out from the crowd. Even an orange safety vest thrown over your black jacket can help. Reflective tape can be applied to your helmet, jacket, and bike for better visibility.

Don’t Make Rash Maneuvers

Finally, it’s important that you avoid making any moves that would jeopardize your safety. Weaving through traffic, speeding, tailgating, and riding along the shoulder or in a bike lane are all very unsafe practices that can cause you to get in an accident very quickly. Follow the rules of traffic and maintain a safe following distance at all times.
